A WORD FROM OUR CHAIR
Kia ora koutou,
This will be my final update as Chair. At our AGM scheduled for Thursday 15 June at 1pm (online), I will be stepping down as Chair and making way for new leadership. We will be inducting a new executive (Chair, Treasurer, Secretary) but those of us vacating executive roles will continue to help out in other capacities.
A reminder, all HFESNZ members are welcome to attend the AGM. If you are new to the society, we encourage you to get involved. The AGM includes the necessary formalities, but in keeping with our recent tradition we will be ending with a member presentation and then saving some time for informal chatter and networking.
We are currently seeking several new committee members, including for the following specific roles:
- General committee members – new members welcome! It's a great stepping stone to future leadership roles within the society.
- Secretary – open to any HFESNZ member.
- HFESNZ representative to HASANZ Governance Group.
- Chair – open to any HFESNZ member but ideally someone with committee experience. (Nomination received)
- Treasurer – open to any HFESNZ member. (Nomination received)
- PAB convenor – should be a certified professional member of HFESNZ with recent PAB experience. (Nomination received)
If you are interested but want more information, feel free to contact me at chair@hfesnz.org.nz. If you would like a copy of the nomination form, please email Carole at admin@hfesnz.org.nz.
Shortly after the AGM we will also be having our conference in Arrowtown, 5-7 July. Our conference committee have been hard at work, arranging a fabulous line-up of presentations including multiple international visitors. For more info, please visit https://hfesnz.org.nz/2023-annual-conference/
As I wrap up my term as Chair I would like to thank everyone who has supported me in this role for the past two years, especially our incredible Committee and PAB members. It has certainly been an interesting few years, and it has not been easy, but the Society has achieved some great things especially through the Workforce Development Project and I'm looking forward to seeing what the new executive make happen.
Ngā mihi nui,
Vanessa Beanland

The AGM will be held online, Thursday, 15 June 2023 at 1:00pm. All HFESNZ members are welcome to attend.

HASANZ
HASANZ AGM will be held on 27th July in Wellington.
What should be the future focus of HASANZ in collaboration with associations?
At the last GG meeting it was decided that all members would go back to their associations and ask what they think HASANZ should concentrate on, in terms of how they envisage HASANZ enabling Association members through collaboration. Please feed-back to admin@HFESNZ.org.nz any suggestion you have.
Strategy
HASANZ Strategy development continues. Wil be available shortly.
Areas under discussion are;
Seeking suggested additions to the ACC list of occupational diseases
The Minister for ACC announced a review of Schedule 2 of the Accident Compensation Act 2001 (the AC Act). Schedule 2 provides a route for a person to access ACC cover for certain work-related gradual process, disease, or infection injuries.
The Government is seeking suggestions for potential additions to the list of occupational diseases in Schedule 2, via a public consultation. If you are interested in submitting, visit the
MBIE website. Any questions about the submission process should be directed to ACregs@mbie.govt.nz.
ACC Recovery at Work- Upcoming Launch
ACC is preparing to launch a campaign from June focused promoting the benefits of recovery at work to employers and injured employees. Recovery at work for non-complex injuries (such as sprains and strains) is beneficial for all parties. For businesses it can mean holding on to key skills and expertise, while the injured employee can recover faster and also earn 100% of their pre-injury income through ACC’s weekly compensation and pay for productive hours. The campaign is centred around the concept ‘Teamwork makes recovery work’ and the roles the employer, employee and their health provider play in the process. ACC is producing three instructional videos, resources, and a campaign page on its website which make the process simple to follow for all parties.
ACC is interested in understanding what communication channels may be available from June onwards to share these resources in a meaningful and useful way for your membership, including requirements and deadlines. This might include, but not limited to, social media, newsletters, speaking opportunities or webinars.
ACC Launched new online wellbeing module for farmers and growers
ACC’s partner Farmstrong has created a series of free online wellbeing modules called ‘Calmer Farmer’ for injured farmers and growers to understand and track their own wellbeing and risks of accidents on the job. For more information visit the Farmstrong website.

The final report includes our vision for health and safety governance, and principles that can support boards, officers and leaders turn that vision into action.
