Become a Technical Professional Member

The purpose of the Technical Professional Member category is to recognise that some HFE activities form a significant part of your work. You have detailed or specialist HFE knowledge and experience in a specific area.

You could be eligible to become a Technical Professional Member if you have:

  • Relevant HFE education to at least Level 7 NZQA (Bachelor’s degree),
  • At least 200 days over 2 years’ experience, and
  • Have at least one year of HFE supervised or mentored practice.

You will have detailed or specialist HFE knowledge and experience in a specific area.

Download and complete the Professional Application Form and provide all the relevant evidence if you want to apply to become a Technical Professional Member.

Technical Member Requirements

As a Technical Professional Member you will be able to demonstrate a level of knowledge equivalent to a minimum of:

  • Level 7 NZQA (Bachelor’s degree), and
  • the core subject is related to the HFE discipline.

As a Technical Professional Member you must:

  • have received a minimum of 1 year supervised HFE experience, or have
  • HFE mentored professional practice.

Supervision must be provided by a Fellow or Certified HFESNZ Professional or equivalent and may be interweaved with or follow on from the formal HFE component.

For example, this experience or mentored practice may include:

  • project work
  • a thesis completed under supervision (as part of a HFE educational course)
  • working closely with other human factors professionals/ergonomists on a joint project, etc. 

As a Technical Professional Member you must be able to:

  • Demonstrate a period of qualifying work experience of a minimum of 200 days over a period of at least 2 years in HFE practice, and/or teaching, and/or research, and/or supervision, and/or management.
  • Provide evidence of having carried out a minimum of 6 (maximum of 15) HFE activities or projects.

As a Technical Professional Member you must be able to:

  • demonstrate 50% proficiency across the HFE competencies at level 1 or higher, and
  • at least one of the five major competency areas must be level 3 or higher for all competencies within that group.

FAQs

There are many benefits if you decide to become a Technical Professional Member:

  • You can use the post-nominal TNZHFE
  • You will have full voting rights on HFENZ issues
  • You will be eligible to apply for the HFESNZ mentorship programme, or to be a mentor
  • Following HFESNZ application to HASANZ in 2025 we expect you should be able to list yourself on the HASANZ Register
  • You will be part of a growing community in New Zealand of like-minded professionals 
  • You will have access to the HFESNZ special interest groups, webinars, and regular newsletter
  • You will get reduced-rate entry to events organised by HFESNZ and to the UKs CIEHF magazine - The Ergonomist 

Technical Professional Members can use the post-nominal TNZHFE.

They may refer to themselves as either an Ergonomist or Human Factors Professional and can use any of the titles:

  • Technical NZ Human Factors and Ergonomics Professional
  • Technical NZ Ergonomist
  • Technical NZ Human Factors Professional.

 

Yes. If you think you are ready to progress to the Certified member category, use the HFESNZ Member Pathways diagram and look at the Membership Categories document that outlines the requirements to check if you are eligible.

 

 

Application fee $75 +GST, Annual Membership Fee $250 +GST.

Please note in 2025 we will be applying to HASANZ for all our Professional Members to be eligible to list on the HASANZ Register. Part of their requirements is that all members listed must hold relevant insurance. HFESNZ will make it a requirement for all Technical Members to hold insurance once this change is made.

The benefits of being on the HASANZ Register is that it allows anyone who needs a health and safety professional, across a wide range of disciplines. This will make you more easily accessible by New Zealand businesses.

 

Yes. As a Professional Member of HFESNZ you will be required to keep and submit suitable annual CPD records.

The CPD period is from the 1 April to 31 March every year and you have until the 30th April each year to submit their CPD records. If you fail to submit your annual CPD you may be at risk of being removed as a Professional Member of HFESNZ.

In your CPD records you will be asked to complete the online form to demonstrate:

  • suitable, up-to-date CPD covering at least 5 activities over a 12-month period (totally at least 30 hours, covering the range of competency areas) and
  • a plan covering at least 3 activities outlining how they will maintain and develop their competencies in the following year.

Technical Professional Members must abide a Code of Conduct, and a Complaints and Disciplinary Process applies to these members.
