The purpose of the Fellow Professional Member category is to provide further opportunity for Professional Members to progress your professional level. It recognises your significant contributions to HFE and your senior professional responsibility.

You could be eligible to become a Fellow Professional Member if you have:

  • HFE education to at least 7 NZQA (Bachelor’s degree),
  • Made significant contributions for at least 10 years and 5 years of senior professional responsibility, and
  • Have had at least 1 year of HFE supervised or mentored practice

The annual membership fees for Fellow Members are $350+GST

Requirements of becoming a Fellow Professional Member

As a Fellow Professional Member you must be able to demonstrate a level of knowledge equivalent to a minimum of:

  • Level 7 NZQA (Bachelor’s degree) (or equivalent), and
  • the core subject is related to the HFE discipline, and
  • at least one year of which is in HFE e.g. Bachelor, PGDip, Masters, (or equivalent in a series of papers), OR
  • you have gained relevant work experience in HFE which is demonstrated across the five competency areas.

As a Fellow Professional Member you must:

  • have received a minimum of 1 year supervised HFE experience, or have
  • HFE mentored professional practice.

Supervision must be provided by a Fellow or Certified HFESNZ Professional or equivalent and may be interweaved with or follow on from the formal HFE component.

For example, this experience or mentored practice may include:

  • project work
  • a thesis completed under supervision (as part of a HFE educational course)
  • working closely with other human factors professionals/ergonomists on a joint project, etc. 

As a Fellow you must be able to:

  • Demonstrate your significant contributions to HFE for at least 10 years in HFE practice, and/or teaching, and or research, and/or supervision, and/or management.
  • Provide evidence of having at least 5 years of senior professional responsibility (SPR).
  • Provide at least one piece of evidence for each of the 5 competency areas
  • Provide a 250 word summary to support the application and eligibility. This should be a coherent commentary that paints a picture of your professional development and achievements.

As a Fellow Professional Member you must be able to demonstrate 100% proficiency across the HFE competencies at level 3 or higher, with the majority at a proficiency of level 4-5.

There are many benefits if you decide to become a Fellow Professional Member:

  • You will have full voting rights on HFENZ issues
  • Following HFESNZ application to HASANZ in 2025 we expect you should be able to list yourself on the HASANZ Register

Fellow Professional Members can use the post-nominal FNZHFE. They may refer to themselves as either an Ergonomist or Human Factors Professional and can use any of the titles:

  • Certified NZ Human Factors and Ergonomics Professional
  • Certified NZ Ergonomist
  • Certified NZ Human Factors Professional.

No. The Fellow Professional Member category is the highest membership category HFESNZ offers.

It is a requirement for Fellow Professional Members to hold appropriate Professional Indemnity and Public Liability Insurances, and Statutory Liability insurance is recommended.

Holding appropriate insurances is also one of the requirements for listing on the HASANZ Register.

Yes. Fellow Professional Members are eligible to list on the HASANZ Register.

The benefits of being on the HASANZ Register is that it allows anyone who needs a health and safety professional, across a wide range of disciplines. This will make you more easily accessible by New Zealand businesses.

Please note as this is a new membership category in 2025 we will be applying to HASANZ to include all our Professional Members so they are eligible to list on the HASANZ Register. We will provide more information about how Fellow Professional Members can join the HASANZ Register once the changes have been made.

Yes. As a Professional Member of HFESNZ you will be required to keep and submit suitable annual CPD records.

The CPD period is from the 1 April to 31 March every year and you have until the 30th April each year to submit their CPD records. If you fail to submit your annual CPD you may be at risk of being removed as a Professional Member of HFESNZ.

In your CPD records you will be asked to complete the online form to demonstrate:

  • suitable, up-to-date CPD covering at least 5 activities over a 12-month period (totally at least 30 hours, covering the range of competency areas) and
  • a plan covering at least 3 activities outlining how they will maintain and develop their competencies in the following year.
