An Introduction to Human Systems Integration (HSI) - the dual perspectives of Systems Engineering and Human Factors.

Join our lunchtime session with guest speaker, Grace Kennedy (Chair of the INCOSE HSI Working Group), to explore all things Human Systems Integration/Human Factors Integration. In systems development, trying to fit the human to the technology is a risky, and some would say, futile situation in terms of achieving system performance and safety assurance. An HSI approach enables us to not only fit the technology to the human, but to develop human-centred designs that let the human be human, and enables us to think in terms of the design and behaviour of the total sociotechnical system. So how do we explicitly include the human voice within the systems engineering process? Through a series of examples, we'll cover what HSI is (and what it isn't), why's it needed and when, who does it and how both SEs and HFs can collaborate to ensure that the human is considered adequately throughout the systems lifecycle.

Bio: Grace Kennedy is a Principal Consultant in Human Factors at Acmena Group where she specialises in the integration of human factors and systems engineering in safety-critical industries. With over 15 years' experience in industry and academia across rail, defence, healthcare, manufacturing and the utilities sectors she relishes using her sociotechnical perspective to solve industry's problems. Throughout her career she has had one foot in Systems Engineering and one foot in Human Factors; from the early days starting out as a SE in the aerospace industry, before becoming a researcher in organisational systems engineering at Loughborough University, and then holding dual roles as a Research Fellow in Systems Engineering and a Lecturer in HF & Ergonomics at the University of Wollongong. Grace is chair of the INCOSE HSI Working Group and is an inducted member of the INCOSE Technical Leadership Institute. She is a chartered engineer and Certified Systems Engineering Professional.
